Indianola High School has a rich tradition in track and field and the team of Sam Gorsche, JJ Kotz, Brennan Davey and TJ Sunkten only added to the tradition during their careers at Indianola. Under the leadership of Coach Tucker, this foursome made its mark during the 2010 season winning the 4 x 400 M. Relay at the Drake Relays and then capped off the season with a State Championship Title. There championship time 3:18.12 ranks 8th all-time in the State of Iowa in this event.
Our first member to be recognized is Sam Gorsche. While in high school, Sam was a three sport athlete participating in cross country, track, and swimming. He was also the IHSSA State Champion in Public Forum Debate in 2011. He went onto study at Washington University in St. Louis where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in Economics, and political science; and minored in finance. He participated in track earning a varsity letter in 2012. Sam would like to thank his family, coaches Mark Tucker, Kevin Barnes, Stacy Garrels and debate coach Spenser Waugh for all their support in high school. He currently resides in Mountain Vieco, CA near San Francisco where he is an Analyst at Cornerstone Research, an economic and financial consulting firm.
JJ Kotz was a three sport athlete for the Indians during his years at Indianola participating in football, swimming and track. He earned academic all conference in all sports while also being involved in choir and show choir. After graduating in 2010, JJ went on to study at Central College, earning a degree in 2014. While at Central, JJ participated in football for the Dutch. He would like to thank all of his coaches and teachers that instilled in him that when you work hard, good things happen…namely Coaches Kluver, Lickiss, Lullmann and Garrels. JJ would also like to thank Mrs. Hagener his high school music teacher and Celeste Gebhart for all she does for student athletes at Indianola. JJ or should we say “Mr. Kotz” is currently an 8th grade Social Studies teacher and coaches football and track at Indianola Middle School. JJ currently lives in West Des Moines with his wife, Samantha.
TJ Suntken was a 2010 graduate of Indianola. TJ was a two sport athlete while in high school participating in basketball and track. In basketball, TJ was a two year starter for the Indians and was recognized both his junior and senior season as an all conference athlete. In track, he starred for the Indians and went onto NWMS University to compete for the Bearcats where he was named team captain. He graduated with a degree in Dietetics and Nutrition in 2014. He would like to recognize several teachers/coaches that helped shape his life: Bob Young, Bert Hanson, Adam Graham, Will Nailor, Scott Post and Mark Tucker. TJ currently lives in Chicago area where he is Professional Clothier with Tom James.
Brennan Davey is the last member of this relay team; Brennan will be recognized tonight as a member of a Team of Distinction, and as an individual Athletic Achievement Recipient.
