The Indianola Girls Track coaching staff couldn’t wait for the 1990-1991 school year as they knew that they had a gem coming in – Summer Johnson. As a 7th and 8th grader she showed how great she might be as she won the State 800 and 1500 Meter Run both years. She didn’t disappoint as in her first fall of cross country as a 9th grader, Summer was the conference champion and went on to win the State Championship. She started off her track season winning the State Indoor 3000 Meter Run and added the outdoor 3000 Run title as well. Summer went on to win another State Cross Country championship her senior year, adding to her four conference championships. Her time of 11.22 her senior year was the 6th fastest ever run in state competition. In track, Summer had a total of 15 state championships with 12 of them being individual and three relay championships. She also helped the Indians to three straight State Indoor team titles and two outdoor team titles. Summer also won two Drake Relays titles in the 3000 Meter Run as well as two 4 x 400 Relay titles. She also finished 2nd her senior year in the 3000 running 9:58 for a school record and one of the fastest times ever. Summer is also one of the few athletes ever to win the same event at the State Outdoor meet four times as she did in the 3000 Run. After graduation, Summer took her running talents to Drake University where she became the 1st female athlete at Drake to be all-Conference four times in the same sport. To show her versatility, and that she has no fear, Summer also pole vaulted for Drake University as the new event was pioneered three years ago.
