Sue was one of the finest middle distance runners ever in the state of Iowa. She won individual outdoor championships in the 800 Meter Run in 1980 and 1981 and also won the 1500 Meter Run in 1981. Sue also won the State Indoor 880 and 440 runs, setting a state record in the 440. She was involved in eleven individual and relay championships. Her most memorable race was the Distance Medley during her junior season, where she anchored the relay to a new state meet record, with one of the fastest 800’s ever run. However, her greatest race was at the Drake Relays during her senior season when she recorded the 2nd fastest time ever for the 800 Meter Run. Her time still stands as a Drake Relays record. Sue went on to perform for the perennial national champions – University of Nebraska. She now resides in San Francisco, California. Nelson’s high school coach was Ron Werling.
