Basketball – baseball – golf – academics… name it, Mark Campbell excelled at it! During the 2000-2001 school year, Mark not only performed at a high level in multiple areas, he was an integral part of the Indians’ basketball team who took the whole Indianola community for a memorable ride in March, 2001. The Indians, led by Coaches Bert Hanson and Ken Beane, claimed the 4-A State Basketball Championship by defeating conference rival Urbandale, a team that had beaten the Indians twice during the regular season.

During Mark’s basketball career he was named first team All-Conference both his junior and senior years. He led his team in scoring his junior year averaging 19.8 points a game. And on ‘championship night’ Mark was selected to the state 4-A All-Tournament Team.

During high school, Mark was also a standout on the baseball diamond. During his final two seasons, Mark earned second team All-Conference honors as a catcher. He was also named to the second unit of the All-District team. Also during his junior and senior seasons, the Indians recorded a team record of 60-17 and were conference champions in 2010.

Rounding out his athletic competition as an Indian, Mark was also a member of the golf team. During both his junior and senior seasons, Mark was awarded team MVP honors.

After high school, Mark enrolled at the University of Iowa where he graduated in 2006 with a degree in Economics. Upon graduation, he moved to Monterey, California where he attended the Defense Language Institute and earned a degree in Arabic in 2008. For the next three years, Mark served our country as a member of the United States Army. During much of this time, he was deployed to Afghanistan and was involved with high level operations. Using his extensive training and high security clearance, Mark was responsible for supporting both regular army and special operation forces using intricate technical analysis as well as his knowledge of Arabic. Mark was also responsible for evaluation of information and developing appropriate action response.

After recently being discharged from the service, Mark is exploring opportunities available to him in his field of unique training.

Mark is the son of Bill and Jeanette Campbell of Indianola. Mark, not only do we congratulate you on your induction to the Indianola Hall of Fame, but we are deeply grateful to you for your service to our country.
