Growing up with three younger brothers, 1998 IHS grad Kelly (Campbell) Nelsen set the athletic bar high for her siblings to follow. The multi-sport standout helped lead the Indians to success in volleyball, softball and tennis.
During the fall season, Kelly excelled on the volleyball court. She earned first team All CIML honors for three consecutive seasons. Kelly was also recognized for her elite play by being selected third team All State her senior year.
During the spring of 1998, Kelly led her tennis team to the conference championship and a fifth place finish at the state team meet. She and her doubles partner also qualified for state and finished ninth.
When summer arrived, Kelly competed for the Indians softball team. As a mainstay in the line-up during the 1996 and 1997 seasons, Kelly helped lead the Indians to back to back third place finishes at the state tournament. During the 1997 season, Kelly was selected first team All-Conference and fifth team All-State.
Continuing her education and volleyball career, Kelly spent two years at Southwestern Community College then finished her final two years at Drake University. While at Southwestern, Kelly led her 1999 team to a third place finish at the national tournament while earning first team All-Region and first team Academic All-American honors. Kelly’s volleyball career ended at Drake where she earned second team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors.
Kelly mentions current and former Indianola coaches: Lana Smith, Kim Arndt, Aleisa Wright, Marlin Bollin and Dave Summy for their instruction and encouragement while at IHS. Kelly resides in Indianola with her husband Neil and their three children: Aspen (6), Grady (3) and Casen (1). She is the daughter of Bill and Jeanette Campbell of Indianola.
