Joel Johnson, a 1987 graduate, was a versatile four sport performer, earning 11 varsity letters. He was an All-Conference athlete twice in football and basketball and three times AllConference in baseball. Joel was also a conference high jump champion and placed at the State Meet on the 4 x 800 Meter Relay team. He was also on the 1986 State Play-Off Football team, where he was a kicker and defensive back. However, baseball was his best sport. He was a star pitcher for the Indians and an All-American at Simpson College, earning Most Valuable Player honors for the Iowa Conference. Following his career at Simpson, he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals.
