Jerry Wetzel had an outstanding coaching career in Girls Basketball. Jerry came to Indianola in 1980 after very successful coaching stints at Bedford and Wayne of Corydon. At Indianola, he compiled a 211-142 win/loss record, guiding two teams into the State Tournament and had numerous teams play in the sub-state finals games. Coach Wetzel’s 1986 six-player team finished 2nd and his 1992 team in their first year in the five player game where they finished 4th. Jerry showed his versatility to be able to adapt from the six to five player game. His career coaching record for Girls Basketball is 543 wins and 273 losses. Very few coaches have attained 500 plus wins during their coaching careers. For this honor, Jerry was recognized at the NCAA Women’s Basketball Finals.
However, basketball was not the only coaching expertise that he held. Coach Wetzel was very instrumental in starting girls track in the State of Iowa back in the early 1960’s and was considered one of the premier track coaches during his career. Also very active professionally, he has served on the Iowa Girls State Track Advisory Committee for six years and was in charge of the National Coaches Convention held in Des Moines. During his final coaching season, he was given the very prestigious Jack North Award, recognizing his 36 year coaching career and was also selected as the National Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Jerry is now retired from both teaching and coaching.
