A graduate of Newton High School, Coach Starr found his way to Indianola by way of Drake University where he earned his BS & MA. While attending Drake he was a two sport varsity athletes lettered in both basketball and track. In 1957 Dick took a teaching position at Indianola High School where he taught US History, coached football, basketball and tennis. Coach Starr commented “I really enjoyed my teaching and coaching career at Indianola High School…I was fortunate to have great young people to work with.” In 1967 Dick left Indianola High School and began his collegiate coaching career at Simpson College. While at Simpson, Dick was the head men’s basketball coach for 12 season, 9 seasons as women’s tennis coach, and 16 seasons as head men’s tennis coach. While at Simpson, he was recognized by his peers and received Iowa Conference Coach of the year three times. Coach Starr was inducted into the Simpson College Coaches Hall of Fame in 1997. Dick and his wife Danna still reside in Indianola. They are parents of David and Dana.
