Brandon Abernathy Class of 2011 The Indianola wrestling program has had eleven state champions in the past 40 years, but had never had two in the same year until 2011. Brandon excelled at three sports in high school. He earned second team All Conference and second team All District honors as a two-year starter on the varsity baseball team. On the gridiron, Brandon was a three-year varsity starter at linebacker, earning 3rd team and 2nd team All State honors in his junior and senior seasons, in addition to being named to the Des Moines Register All CIML Elite Team as a senior. Brandon was also selected to play in the Shrine Bowl football game, an honor given to the finest senior; Brandon became the fourth wrestler in the history of Indianola wrestling to place all four years at the state wrestling tournament, placing 8th, 3rd, and 4th in his first three seasons. On his way to a state title his senior year, Brandon recorded two pins and did not allow a single point in his four matches at the State Wrestling Tournament. Brandon had a career record of 157 – 19, including 100 wins by pin, all while competing at 171 and 189 pounds. Brandon helped lead his team to three state dual team appearances and a top six finish all four years of the state individual tournament. After high school, Brandon became a four-year letter winner for the Simpson College football team, earning 1st team All Conference honors and being selected as the Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, Brandon was an outstanding student and earned numerous academic awards in both high school and college; including being named all four years to the Iowa Conference All Academic team. Brandon cites the efforts of his many coaches; he would also like to acknowledge the sacrifices of his parents, Mike and Laurie Abernathy, in contributing to his success. After graduating from Simpson College with an accounting degree in 2015, Brandon moved to Ankeny and currently works in the accounting department at Praxair.
