Bill Hulen was a 1954 graduate of Indianola High School. Bill was a three year starter for the Indians. He was an Honorable Mention All-State lineman in 1952 and a 3rd Team All-State selection in 1953, back in the day when there was only one class of football in the state. Bill went on to play football at Simpson College where he was twice a 1st Team All-Conference selection and an NAIA All-American in 1957. He was a charter member of the Simpson College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969. Bill had a tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers and played football in the U.S. Army, where he was on the U.S. Army Championship team in 1960. He taught and coached for 36 years at Southeast Polk Schools, but was always an Indianola resident.
