A native of Pocahontas, Bert graduated in 1962 where he was a four sport athlete participating in football, basketball, track and golf. He went on to Northwest Missouri State University playing football and golf for the Bearcats. After graduating in 1966, Bert then went into coaching where he spent 3 years at Sentral Fenton, 12 years at Lake Mills, and 22 years at Indianola. Bert has lead his teams to: 10 conference championships, 2 sectional championships, 13 district championships, 8 sub-state championships, 6 state-qualifying teams, 2 third place finishes at state, 1 second place finish, and led the Indian squad to Indianola’s first ever State Basketball title in 2001. Bert’s career record is 531 wins and 256 losses, which ranks him 13th in the state of Iowa for career victories, reaching a coaching milestone with his 500th victory with a win over Oskaloosa on December 18th, 2002.
Bert retired in 2003 and is currently a substitute teacher in the Indianola School District. He still stays active coaching girl’s basketball at the middle school level. Bert is married to Nancy and has five children, Hilary, Hayley, Lisa, Craig, and Eric. Bert is also know as the neighborhood “kid sitter”.
